Real Colors: One Romanian startup to watch really close!

Real Colors is a mobile app that helps designers find color inspiration in the real world around them. It is a tool that automatically ”drills” for harmonious color palettes in the photos taken with the mobile phone. Real Colors was reviewed and apreciated by Google’s Android Staff – you can view the video here and almost 10.000 people are using the app and really loving it. Which of course accounts for the 4.7 stars on Google Play. :-)

Real Colors‘s vision is to assist people in being more creative with color. The 10+ team that makes this possible is made up of three talented Romanian entrepreneurs with an unbeatable desire to make it big:

  • Andrei Blaj, Technology Engineer, 10+ software development experience
  • Catalin Morosan, Mobile Engineer, 10+ software development experience
  • Mihai Iova, Idea Engineer, 10+ design experience

For more info on the platform, you can check out the website: realcolors.makan-studios.com or hit Google Play. Since we are very curios in nature, we challenged Andrei for a quick chat and here’s what we found out. Enjoy!

1. How would you define an entrepreneur and why did you decide to enter the startup scene?

An entrepreneur is an engine of change. I decided to enter the startup scene to make my own way in this world. I am also motivated by difficult challenges and this was a very good candidate.

2. Until Real Colors, you were part of the Branient. How was the experience and did it influence you in any way?

Brainient was a great experience. I noticed how a startup works first hand. I have learned a lot, both technically and on the business side.

3. Could you tell us more about the concept behind Real Colors?

Real Colors is a mobile app for creative people that automatically generates harmonious color palettes from photos taken with the mobile phone. For the non-designers out there, a color palette is a set of colors that match each other in some way and that are used by designers as a starting point in their projects: websites, product design, interior design, paintings etc.

4. What makes Real Colors different from other similar applications?

There are some other apps that help designers generate color palettes, but we stand out because of our unique technology (our algorithms automatically generate color palettes using color theory models) and our extremely easy to use user interface. We had great reviews on both the technology and the UI.

5. You have launched an Android application. How was it received on the mobile app market?

We had great results until now on the Google Play Store. We are a Google Staff Pick app on both mobile and tablet, we have 70.000 downloads for the free app and over 3000 for the paid app. We have excellent reviews from both professionals (Google developers and designers, design blogs and websites) and our users: we have 4.7 out of 5 stars for the paid app.

6. What are your plans for the future? Actually, where do you see Real Colors in the next year?

We are now working full speed on the iPhone version of Real Colors.

Our plans for the next year include going towards a cloud based solution. This will give our users the possibility to save their color palettes on our server and access them from another device: mobile, tablet, computer. We also plan on making Real Colors more fun and social.

7. And since we’re talking about your future plans, how do you see the Romanian start up scene? If you were to change something, what would that be?

The Romanian startup scene has great technical potential. I believe in a step by step approach to change. The Romanian startup scene is growing fast and strong. Maybe I would try to improve the quality of the speakers at startup related events, I would let more people that have thorough hands on experience talk and share.

8. You worked in a startup that’s no longer a local business and now you’re developing your own. If you were to give young entrepreneurs in Romania a key piece of advice, what would that be?

Go global.

9. You were part of the Venture Connect edition that took place on 31st May. Could you tell us more about the experience?

Venture Connect was a great experience for us, it made us think more thoroughly about what we do, for who we do and why would anyone else take interest in us and our business. We also met some really cool people along the way. Thank you Alexandra & co!
